Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation
Michael McLaughlin joined the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation as the Chief of Rail Transportation in October 2017. Prior to joining DRPT, Michael was the Deputy Chief of Staff at the Chicago Transit Authority, overseeing capital projects and government and media relations for the nation’s second largest transit agency. Michael also worked on Capitol Hill for over 12 years as a senior transportation aide and Chief of Staff to Authorizing and Appropriations committee members in both the House and Senate.
At DRPT, Michael oversees rail planning projects and programs, and serves as the day-to-day point person on the $3.7 billion landmark deal struck between Virginia and CSX that Governor Northam announced in December of 2019. Michael resides in Mechanicsville, Virginia with his wife Sarah and their five children. He holds his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa and has his Master’s Degree in Public Policy from Indiana University.
